about
THE MIND’S I
Me, myself and I. we refer to ourselves many times in a day. We seem to be very sure about what is me and what isn’t. But is it so clear? Imagine they separate your brain from the rest of your body but keep every neural connection intact through a remote system. Your brain is is now in a laboratory and the rest of you is walking around the world. You can carry a normal life, see, hear, eat, think, because everything seems to be as it was, but when I ask you “where are you?” what do you answer? Are you the brain that stays in the lab or the body that’s carrying out all these actions? or is your self spread in more than one place at a time?
Let’s picture another scenario: if teleportation was a reality I could step in a teleportation booth here on earth and appear in another planet. The process will be as follows: the machine creates an identical copy (molecule by molecule) of myself in Mars and then destroys the original on Earth. But what if the last part of the process isn’t executed? then, am I at two places at a time? The one in Mars is not me? it certainly has the same appearance, experiences and memories that I have, so what would make him not me? These and other examples from fiction and non-fiction writings are included in Dennett and Hofstadter’s book “The mind’s I”, which closely examines the concepts of self and soul.
While I'm a huge fan of electronic music, I love when these projects also introduce a narrative aspect. The unfolding history of Martin's musical journey adds such a wonderful dimension while listening to these albums. Not to mention the great visuals, too.
