about

CONQUEST

One of the questions that’s tried to be answered about our evolution is why do we have such big brains? A human brain is expensive to produce and maintain. It consumes a fair amount of energy, makes our heads heavier and is a dangerous organ to produce. So why did evolution push for bigness in brains instead of more agile pinheads? Several theories have been presented throughout the years, such as the need for toolmaking or developing social strategies. On his book “The Meme Machine”, Susan Blackmore presents the idea that the emergence of memes created the selective pressure for big brains. An even more mysterious question is why did consciousness arise at some point of our evolutionary process? Does it have a survival function or is it just a side-effect of other capabilities such as language or intelligence?
