about

D.A.R.Y.L.

In the 1985 movie D.A.R.Y.L. a highly sophisticated robot with the appearance of a child is built by the military with the purpose of creating a super-soldier. When they discover it has developed feelings and human emotions such as fear, the project is considered a failure and D.A.R.Y.L. is to be destroyed. But then the debate comes to place of wether terminating him is simply like dismantling a machine or more like killing a conscious being. At one point there’s a reference to the Turing test when one of the scientists mentions that a machine becomes human when one can no longer tell the difference. Alan Turing was one of the first to theorize about artificial intelligence (AI) when he wrote his study “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”. Since then, much development has been made and we seem to be closer and closer to that reality, but some people argue that as much as the engineering may improve it’s impossible to create human consciousness from just bits.
Regarding the question of cold non-emotional intelligent robots (as AI is often portrayed in science-fiction), some experiments (Damasio 1994) done with subjects with brain damage that causes them to be emotionless (but otherwise well functioning people) prove that, instead of being rational and effective doubtless decision-makers, these subjects are unable to make the most simple choice. So, as Susan Blackmore suggests, “Star Trek’s Mr. Data is simply implausible. If he truly had no feelings he wouldn’t be able to decide wether to get up in the morning, when to speak to Captain Picard or wether to drink tea or coffee.” At one point many decisions come to choosing this or that because you feel like doing so.
