about

G.E.B. I

In his 1979 book “Gödel, Escher, Bach”, Douglas Hofstadter puts together math, logic, art and music by comparing Kurt Gödel’s Theorem of Incompleteness, M.C. Escher’s drawings and J.S. Bach’s music in a very creative, pedagogical and inspiring way. Gödel shook the scientific world when he proved in 1931 that it’s impossible to put together all scientific knowledge in the form of a logical system. At one point, a system that aspires to contain everything needs to refer to itself, crating logical paradoxes. Bach’s cannons or Escher’s tessellations are used to illustrate how this self-reference can, not only create beautiful patterns, but also give birth to unexpected things and “meaning” can emerge out of meaningless elements. In the same way the firing of neurons creates consciousness when our mind refers to itself.
