MIND AND MATTER

“Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body? I don’t know” Still Ill - The Smiths.

From the early stages of philosophy, the mind and body problem has always been subject of debate. In the 17th century René Descartes established what’s been called cartesian dualism, which considers mental and physical states as two different entities coexisting in the real world. With the advance of physicalism that idea has been displaced, and the main consideration from a scientific point of view is that behind every mental experience there are physical facts. But, as Daniel Dennett states in his book “Consciousness explained”, there still exists the idea that all the activity in our brain converges in a central spot, where consciousness suddenly emerges. He calls that the cartesian theater, and uses the metaphor of a small being residing in our brain that watches on a screen all of the data received through our senses and then makes the decisions. The question will then be, how are those decisions made? we would need to look inside this little guy’s brain and find an even smaller guy, taking us into an infinite road where we will never find an answer. The work of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio also indicates that consciousness isn’t concentrated in one single part of the brain. He compares the brain to an orchestra in which the performance of the piece comes from the work of all the musicians at the same time. Following this analogy he points out “the conspicuous absence of a conductor before the performance begins, although, as the performance unfolds, a conductor comes into being. For all intents and purposes, a conductor is now leading the orchestra, although the performance has created the conductor -the self- not the other way around”.
