SHADOWS OF THE MIND

A general belief in cognitive science is that consciousness is the product of the firing of the neurons. What neurons basically do is a binary task, they either fire or not, so it could be said that our brain activity is the product of computational process. But some scientists strongly disagree. For example, Roger Penrose uses Gödel’s theorem to demonstrate that consciousness can’t be the product of an algorithmic process and believes that the answer should be found in quantum physics. The quantum mechanics that take place in a lower level make an influence in the behavior of the neurons and therefore results in non-computational brain activity.
